Songkran Water Festival 2025 – Thailand
April 13–15, 2025

Songkran Water Festival 2025 – Thailand

Bangkok, Chiang Mai & Phuket, Thailand

The world's biggest water fight. Celebrate the Thai New Year with 3 days of water splashing, street parties, and traditional blessings.

About the Festival

Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year and arguably the most fun festival in Asia. While it is famous for its massive nationwide water fights, its roots are deeply spiritual.

"Songkran" comes from Sanskrit meaning "to move into," marking the sun's entry into the zodiac sign of Aries. The water splashing originally symbolized washing away bad luck and sins from the previous year.

Today, it has evolved into a 3-day street party where fire trucks, water guns, and buckets are used to soak everyone in sight. Chiang Mai offers the most intense water fights (turning the city moat into a battle zone), while Bangkok hosts massive electronic music festivals alongside the street action.

Festival Highlights

🔫

Khao San Road

Bangkok's backpacker hub turns into a war zone. Expect shoulder-to-shoulder crowds and non-stop water gun battles.

🛻

Chiang Mai Moat

The ancient city moat becomes the center of action. Pickup trucks loaded with water barrels patrol the streets.

wan

Sand Pagodas

Visit temples to see locals building intricate sand pagodas (Chedis), a way of making merit for the new year.

🙏

Rod Nam Dum Hua

The traditional side: younger people pour scented water over the hands of elders to show respect and ask for blessings.

🎶

S2O Festival

For party lovers, S2O in Bangkok is the world's wettest music festival, featuring top international DJs and massive water cannons.

🏖️

Phuket Beach Party

Celebrate by the sea. Bangla Road in Patong becomes a chaotic mix of nightlife and water fighting.

Essential Festival Tips

1

Waterproof Everything

You WILL get wet. Put your phone, cash, and passport in a high-quality waterproof bag (sold everywhere).

2

Dress Appropriately

Wear quick-drying clothes and swimwear underneath using goggles. Avoid white t-shirts. In temples, dress modestly is still required.

3

Book Accommodation Early

Bangkok and Chiang Mai fill up completely. Prices surge, so book your hotel 3-4 months in advance.

4

Avoid Motorbikes

Road safety is a major issue during Songkran. Avoid renting scooters. Stick to the BTC/MRT in Bangkok or walking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I opt out of getting wet?

Not really. Unless you stay inside your hotel room, you are fair game. Even walking to 7-Eleven can result in being soaked.

Is the water clean?

Mostly tap water or ice water (which is shocking!). However, in Chiang Mai, avoid swallowing moat water as it's not sanitary.

Where is the best place for families?

Bangkok's Silom road is pedestrianized and generally safer than Khao San. Hotels with pools often host their own milder parties.
