Marked our engagement anniversary by moving through three Austrian cities and it never once felt rushed despite what the itinerary suggests on paper. Salzburg's gardens were the quiet, romantic middle to a trip bookended by grand palaces and alpine peaks.
Three cities in four nights is a brisk pace but we managed it fine as a couple without kids to slow us down. Vienna's Schonbrunn Palace set an impressively grand first impression before we even reached the other two cities. Salzburg's Mirabell Gardens gave us the quiet, romantic afternoon we needed in between the bigger city stops. Swarovski Crystal Worlds near Innsbruck was the unexpected favourite for both of us, neither expecting to be so taken with it. Only wish we had one more night in Salzburg specifically, everything else about the route worked beautifully.
Lovely cities but the train connections between them left very little slack, one delay in Salzburg meant we rushed through Innsbruck's old town. Hafelekar views were still stunning despite the tight schedule. Would suggest travellers build in more buffer between the three stops.
Mirabell Gardens with the fortress behind us made for the most romantic photo of our whole marriage.
Lovely trip, but the Hafelekar cable car had a forty-minute queue that swallowed most of our morning.
A gorgeous route overall, but the connection times between the cities are tight. A delayed train out of Vienna meant we sprinted through Salzburg's fortress grounds just before closing and never made it up the funicular. Build in a buffer if you can.
