One of our planned museum visits was closed with barely any notice and the alternative nearby felt underwhelming, otherwise the city itself charmed us completely.
Historic quarters mixed with modern cafes gave this trip a lovely rhythm for a family with younger kids.
Antwerp is compact and easy to walk even with a stroller, though evenings got surprisingly chilly for summer so pack accordingly. The Grand Market Place and the cathedral are close enough together that we never felt rushed between sights. Chocolate stops became a fun little reward system for the kids after each museum visit. Three nights was just the right length for a family city break without anyone getting tired of walking.
Mornings at the Grand Market Place and an hour in the Rubens House were lovely, but our hotel room was small and dated for a family of four, a real squeeze once the cots and cases went in. The chocolate stops kept everyone's spirits up, at least.
The city charmed us thoroughly, but Cathedral of Our Lady meant a lot of standing and queuing, which our four-year-old had zero patience for, so one of us ended up outside with her. Worth it for the grown-ups though.
Chocolate tasting near Grote Markt became the highlight for our kids, we tried five different shops in three days.
