Honestly the road transfer from Split to Zagreb dragged on much longer than expected and both kids were miserable by the time we checked in. Everything before that, especially the Elafiti Islands day, was excellent though.
Good mix of history and beach time for the family, Zagreb felt slightly rushed at the end.
My father-in-law kept comparing Zagreb's Upper Town to cities he'd visited decades ago, and from him that's high praise.
Dubrovnik's walls at sunset were worth every step, even with a cranky toddler in tow.
Our kids still talk about the walk along Dubrovnik's Old Town walls, tracing the terracotta roofs all the way down to the sea. The boat day out to the Elafiti Islands was just as memorable, both boys jumped straight into the water the moment we anchored. Plitvice Lakes came near the end of the trip and somehow topped everything before it, the waterfalls looked almost unreal. Nine nights felt exactly right for three cities without anyone getting exhausted.
Travelling with three generations is never simple, but this itinerary paced itself well enough that nobody was too worn out by evening. Plitvice Lakes left my mother completely speechless, she kept stopping every few metres for another photo. The kids, meanwhile, were finally tired enough by day's end to sleep properly on the coach transfers. A rare trip where every age group genuinely had a good time.
