Brandenburg Gate at golden hour with the whole family standing underneath was a proper history lesson for my teenagers, more effective than any textbook. Rail journey down to Munich was smooth and scenic, kids had window seats the entire way and never once complained about being bored. Neuschwanstein Castle felt like walking into a fairy tale, even my father who rarely gets impressed by anything was taking photos non-stop. Five nights across two cities worked out perfectly for a family our size.
Neuschwanstein Castle deserves all the hype, we spent nearly the whole day there and still felt rushed. Berlin's Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag gave good historical context before we moved south, a well structured itinerary overall for a family with school going children.
Loved the trip overall, but our Munich hotel check-in dragged on close to an hour with two shattered kids after the train ride, which frayed everyone's nerves. Once we were settled, the castle day the next morning made up for it.
Rail travel between Berlin and Munich turned out to be half the fun, smooth German efficiency our kids kept comparing to trains back home. Neuschwanstein was the undisputed highlight though, felt like living inside a Disney movie for an afternoon.
