Frankfurt felt like more of a pass through city than an actual destination, and our hotel room there was cramped and clearly overdue for an update. The rest of the trip, especially the Cologne Cathedral visit, more than made up for it.
Reichstag dome at sunset was the moment my son declared this trip better than any of his summer camp stories, high praise from a twelve year old. Rail travel between the four cities worked beautifully for us, the kids loved watching the countryside change through the train window. The Glockenspiel show at Marienplatz timed itself perfectly with our visit. Cologne Cathedral at the very end of the trip left the whole family a little speechless.

Berlin to Munich to Frankfurt to Cologne is an ambitious route for nine nights but the trains made it fully manageable with two young kids in tow. Frankfurt was our least favourite stop of the four, everything else was excellent.
Neuschwanstein and the Glockenspiel were the children's clear highlights. The one snag was a very early Cologne train that had us waking the kids at dawn, groggy and grumpy for the first hour.
We caught the Glockenspiel show at Marienplatz right on cue, then took the kids for a Bavarian feast at a beer hall two streets over, a genuinely lovely family evening. Berlin's Brandenburg Gate a few days earlier had already set the tone.
