Neuschwanstein looked straight out of a fairytale, our daughter kept saying it was like a real life Disney castle. Frankfurt was more business-like in comparison but a good stopover.
First international trip for our kids and Germany could not have been a gentler introduction. Cologne Cathedral left everyone in our family staring upward in silence for a good few minutes.
My parents joined us and the three-city pace suited even them. Frankfurt was the quiet middle chapter, more glass towers than sights, but Neuschwanstein and the closing Rhine cruise gave the grandparents plenty to marvel at.
Rothenburg alone was worth the entire eleven nights, medieval streets our kids will remember forever.
Cologne Cathedral left us speechless with how tall and detailed the spires are up close, photographs really don't do it justice. Marienplatz's Glockenspiel was fun but crowded, we had to get there early to get a decent spot with the kids. The Rhine cruise near the end was a peaceful way to close things out. Would recommend to any family wanting history without it feeling like a school trip.
Shopping stop near Munich ran longer than needed and cut into our castle visit time a bit, kids were getting restless. Rothenburg ob der Tauber more than made up for it though, walking those cobblestone lanes felt like time travel.
