Watching that little mechanical show in Marienplatz twice was an accident but a happy one, castle day right after was long and tiring for the grandparents though they insisted it was completely worth the effort.
Frankfurt's old square surprised us, we expected just a business city but the half-timbered houses around Römerberg had real old-world charm. Combined with Munich's castle and Glockenspiel, the whole trip felt like two very different Germanys in one holiday.
Marienplatz square with the Glockenspiel chiming right on the hour became an unexpected daily ritual for us during our Munich stay, the kids set alarms to not miss it. Neuschwanstein Castle the next day felt like the trip's centrepiece, absolutely stunning even with the crowds. Frankfurt's Römerberg Square offered a totally different, more urban vibe with its half-timbered houses. The drive along the Romantic Road tying both cities together was scenic enough that nobody in the back seat complained once.
Romantic Road villages were the quiet surprise of the trip, loved stopping at each one with the family.
We caught the Glockenspiel twice by accident and the kids demanded a third. Neuschwanstein the next morning was every bit the storybook castle they'd been promised, crowds and all.
