Rain washed out our planned viewpoint stop near Vik on day two, quite a letdown after building it up in our heads for months. The rest of the trip more than made up for it though, especially Thingvellir and the geothermal spa evening with my wife.

Iceland with my wife for our tenth anniversary was unlike any trip we have done before. Godafoss, the so called Waterfall of the Gods, had this raw power that photos simply do not capture. Walking directly behind the curtain of Seljalandsfoss soaked us both completely but neither of us stopped laughing the whole time. Reynisfjara's black sand and basalt columns felt like standing on another planet.

Iceland as a couple's destination completely lived up to the hype for us. Standing at Thingvellir between two tectonic plates felt oddly profound holding hands with my partner.

Breathtaking landscapes throughout, though the long driving days between stops can tire a couple out.

Starting in Akureyri rather than straight into Reykjavik was the right call for us. It stayed quiet and unhurried for the first few nights before the drama of the South Coast, and the geothermal spa evening near the end was pure indulgence for two tired travellers.
