My in-laws travelled with us and even they, not the most adventurous pair, said this was one of the better trips we have done as a family. The pace was gentle enough for the grandparents yet exciting enough for a ten year old.
Took our two kids, aged seven and eleven, and both were completely absorbed by the Arctic landscape from day one. The botanical garden walk was a nice breather between the bigger adventures. Only complaint is the weather changed so fast we had to keep repacking bags, though I suppose that is just Iceland being Iceland.
We loved the itinerary, but three nights genuinely felt rushed for a country this vast. We would happily have added a full day just for Vatnajokull National Park, the kids were only getting into it when it was time to move on.
Three nights in Akureyri turned out to be just enough time to fall completely in love with the place. Standing in front of Godafoss with the spray hitting our faces was the highlight for both kids, who still talk about it. The botanical garden was a lovely calm afternoon after all that adventure. Our farewell dinner overlooking the fjord was the perfect way to end a short but memorable family trip.
Kids still ask when we are going back to see Godafoss again.
