Walking behind that thundering waterfall was the highlight for our kids, getting properly wet and laughing about it the rest of the day. Godafoss earlier in the trip set a high bar that the rest of the waterfalls somehow still managed to clear.
Skogafoss and Godafoss were both magnificent, though the climb beside Skogafoss was a stretch too far for the grandparents who came along and they sat it out. A gentler viewpoint for them would have been welcome.
Glacier landscapes at Vatnajokull made our kids feel impossibly small in the best possible way.
Vatnajokull was the surprise hit for our fourteen-year-old, the glacier hike is still his answer whenever anyone asks about the trip. Akureyri as a starting point felt calm and un-touristy, which suited our lot.
Godafoss lived up to its name completely, standing before the Waterfall of the Gods with the whole family in complete silence for a moment before the kids started asking a hundred questions. Vatnajokull National Park afterward felt like visiting another planet, the scale of the glacier landscape is hard to describe properly. Climbing up beside Skogafoss for the panoramic view was tiring for the grandparents but they insisted on doing it anyway. This route through Iceland's north and south gave our family a much wider sense of the country than a typical short trip.
