Covering Reykjavik, Vik and Akureyri in six nights is an ambitious but doable pace if you like early starts. Thingvellir and the geothermal area near Hverir were the standout stops for us. A bit more free time in Reykjavik itself would have been nice.
Roads in Iceland are excellent but distances between Reykjavik, Vik and Akureyri are longer than they look on the map. Hverir's bubbling mud pots and the smell of sulphur were an experience neither of us will forget. Only wish we had one more night to slow down near Akureyri.
Chose this for our honeymoon and Iceland did not disappoint even once. Driving ourselves meant we could linger at Seljalandsfoss as long as we wanted without a group waiting on us. Akureyri in the north felt wonderfully quiet compared to touristy Reykjavik. The whole route from south coast to the north is stitched together beautifully in this itinerary. Already planning to come back in winter for the lights.
Basalt columns at Reynisfjara and the raw Atlantic waves left us speechless, truly a bucket list stop.
Self-driving from Reykjavik down to Vik and up to Akureyri gave us total freedom to stop wherever we liked. Standing at Thingvellir with one foot in Europe and one in America was such a strange, wonderful feeling. Six nights felt just right for covering the ring road highlights without rushing.
Rain followed us for two of the six days and Reynisfjara turned grey and washed out compared to the photos we had pinned. Gorgeous country, but the weather can genuinely make or break this one.
