Roads in the south coast are well maintained and easy even for a first-time international driver in our family. Only downside was how quickly daylight and weather plans shifted, we had to stay flexible with our schedule more than once.
Reynisfjara beach was every bit as dramatic as it looks in photos, black sand against grey Atlantic waves made for a striking contrast our kids still talk about. Road from Reykjavik to Vik passed several other waterfalls we hadn't even planned to stop at.

Strokkur and Seljalandsfoss were everything we'd hoped, but a sudden squall rolled into Reynisfjara and cut our beach time short just as the kids were settling in.
