Six days of driving wore the kids out more than we expected, tempers were short by day four. One afternoon of heavy rain meant we barely got to properly experience Skogafoss, just a quick soggy look before running back to the car. The road trip format is lovely in theory but with young kids the long stretches between stops get tiring fast. Would still recommend it, just pack more patience than we did.
Strokkur erupting right in front of the children was worth the whole trip alone. They must have watched it go off five times before we could drag them away.
Blue icebergs floating in the glacial lagoon looked almost unreal, more like a painting than an actual beach. Our daughter found tiny ice diamonds scattered on the black sand and refused to leave without collecting a few. The kids had never seen anything like it, and honestly neither had we. Six nights suddenly felt too short once we hit that stretch of the route.
Vatnajokull region is massive, our son kept asking if we were still in the same country.
