Godafoss at sunset with the kids was worth the whole nine nights on its own.
Nine nights across Reykjavik, Vik and Akureyri gave our kids (9 and 12) a proper adventure without ever feeling rushed. Standing at Thingvellir between the two continental plates was a genuine goosebumps moment for the whole family, and walking behind Seljalandsfoss with the spray hitting our faces had everyone laughing and shrieking. The drive up to Akureyri was long but broken up nicely, and Godafoss at the end of it felt like a well earned reward. Iceland in July gave us endless daylight so we never once felt rushed for time with the kids.
The self-drive stretch between Vik and Akureyri was far longer than we expected and our younger one got carsick twice on the winding roads. Reynisfjara beach was lovely but we were too tired to enjoy it properly by the time we arrived.
Our teenagers still bring up standing between the tectonic plates at Thingvellir, phones out the entire time.
Beautiful trip overall, three regions covered comfortably in nine nights. Only issue was the rental car pickup at Reykjavik airport took nearly two hours, which ate into our first day.
Beautiful trip covering all three regions comfortably, but the rental car pickup at Reykjavik airport took nearly two hours and swallowed most of our first day. Everything after ran smoothly, it was just a frustrating start with restless kids.
