A week chasing waterfalls and glaciers with my husband, not a single dull moment among them. We are not big planners usually but this route through Vik, Reykjavik and Akureyri kept the logistics simple enough that we could just enjoy being present. Godafoss at the end felt like a fitting, quiet finale to a trip full of big dramatic landscapes. Already saving up to go back in winter for the lights.

Godafoss was every bit as powerful as promised, genuinely one of the best waterfalls we have seen anywhere. Driving distances between the three towns were longer than we expected though, some days felt like more bus time than sightseeing time.

Skogafoss and Godafoss were postcard perfect but Thingvellir was so crowded with tour buses that it felt more like a photo queue than a quiet nature walk. Food across Iceland is expensive regardless of which package you take, just go in prepared for that.

Standing between two tectonic plates at Thingvellir with my partner is one of those things you just cannot explain to people back home. Godafoss a few days later up north was arguably even better, and by then we had stopped trying to pick favourites.

Budget friendly by Iceland standards and still felt like a proper romantic escape.
