Reykjavik as a base had good restaurant options for fussy eaters in the family, which honestly matters more than people admit when travelling with kids. Akureyri felt sleepier but the drive up there had some of the best scenery of the whole trip.
Watching a whale breach a few metres from the boat with my kids screaming in delight next to me is a memory that alone justified this entire trip. Add the glowing icebergs on the black sand at Diamond Beach and the glacier walk, and honestly this was the best family holiday we have ever booked.
Icelandic horses are gentle enough that even our nervous seven year old warmed up to riding one by the end of the session.
Diamond Beach was stunning but bitterly cold, make sure the children are layered properly before you get out of the van. Whale watching tour more than made up for it when a humpback breached right near our boat.
Splitting thirteen nights across three base towns worked a treat with two children, enough driving to see the country without anyone melting down in the back seat. The Blue Lagoon at the very end was the perfect reward for everyone's tired legs.
Splitting the trip across three base towns worked really well with two kids, enough driving to see the country but not so much that anyone got restless in the car. Blue Lagoon at the end was the perfect reward for everyone's tired legs.
