Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was a heavy, important stop for our teenagers to sit with. The floating torii at Itsukushima right after gave us a gentler, more beautiful note to end the day on. Having both back to back on the itinerary felt deliberate rather than rushed. One of the more meaningful days we've had as a family on any trip.
Kyoto's Fushimi Inari was gorgeous but so crowded by mid-morning that our younger one got separated from us for a few genuinely scary minutes near the upper gates. We should have gone right at opening like the itinerary notes suggested but got delayed leaving the hotel. Found her within ten minutes thanks to a kind shop owner, but it shook all of us. Would strongly tell other families to prioritise the early slot.
Mt Fuji from our train window had the whole family, grandparents included, pressed against the glass.
Osaka's food scene alone was worth bringing the kids for. Tokyo at the very end felt slightly rushed compared to the earlier, slower cities though.
Dotonbori at night was sensory overload for the whole family in the best way.
Tokyo at the very end felt rushed; two nights simply was not enough for the family.
