This is a premium priced itinerary and it shows in how smoothly the logistics run across four cities in thirteen nights. My in-laws joined us for this one and even they, not the most adventurous travellers, said Japan exceeded expectations. Dotonbori's food street was a highlight for the grandparents surprisingly. Only feedback is that the Tokyo portion at the end felt slightly compressed given how much the city has to offer.
Miyajima deer, Fushimi Inari gates, Shibuya lights, kids talk about all three constantly even now.
Went in June expecting decent weather and got caught right at the start of rainy season, lost a full day of outdoor sightseeing near Kyoto to heavy rain. Everything else about the planning was good, just unlucky with timing on our part probably.
We went in late spring and the weather cooperated beautifully for most of the trip. Fushimi Inari early morning before the tour groups arrive is the way to do it, we practically had the upper gates to ourselves. Kids loved the bullet train rides between cities almost as much as the sights themselves. Getting a glimpse of Mt Fuji on a clear day near the end felt like a bonus we hadn't expected. Would recommend building in that early morning temple visit to any family doing this route.
Shibuya Crossing with two kids holding hands tightly on both sides, unforgettable chaos.
Really well planned trip, the Hiroshima to Osaka to Kyoto to Tokyo flow makes geographical sense unlike some itineraries that zigzag. Only wish Miyajima had a bit more time allotted since the tide timing matters a lot there.
Late Spring to Early Summer (April-June) for pleasant weather, or Autumn (October-November) for stunning foliage. Note that June brings the start of the rainy season.
