We brought our extended family, grandparents included, on this Hiroshima Osaka Kyoto route and the pace suited everyone reasonably well. Fushimi Inari's endless gates were a highlight for the kids who turned it into a bit of a game climbing up. Dotonbori's energy at night was fantastic though a touch overwhelming for my mother in law given the crowds. Overall a well rounded family trip through some of Japan's most iconic sights.
We travelled with the grandparents and the pace mostly suited three generations. Itsukushima's floating gate at high tide had my father in law reaching for his camera again and again, and Kyoto's temples gave everyone a calm finish.
Every one of the three cities on this route showed us a different side of Japan, which kept our kids engaged throughout six nights. Itsukushima's floating gate at high tide is something photographs simply do not do justice.
Kinkaku-ji's golden reflection had our whole family silent with awe, even the teenagers.
Wonderful route overall, but the Osaka to Kyoto leg landed in rush hour and standing on a packed train with two kids and luggage was no fun. Once we reached Fushimi Inari the next morning all was forgiven.
Bringing our children to Hiroshima first set such a meaningful, reflective tone for the whole Japan trip before the fun really began in Osaka. The floating torii gate at Itsukushima during high tide left all of us quiet for a moment, genuinely beautiful. Dotonbori at night was the polar opposite, neon lights and street food chaos that our kids absolutely loved. Kyoto's Fushimi Inari gates were the perfect calm ending to a trip that covered so much emotional and visual ground.
