Winter Kyoto with the family was calmer than we imagined, fewer crowds at every temple. Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji both exceeded expectations, would happily do this again. The kids handled the cold better than we thought once we layered them up properly. Nishiki Market on the last evening gave us one final burst of local flavour before heading home.
Four generations technically on this trip since my mother-in-law joined us with our two kids for a proper Kyoto winter holiday. Gion at dusk was the quietest, most beautiful start to any trip we've had, barely another soul around. Kinkaku-ji's golden reflection with a bit of frost on the ground looked unreal. Fushimi Inari took us almost two hours climbing through the gates and the kids never once complained, that says something. Nishiki Market dinner on the last night was the perfect way to close things out.
Nishiki Market was a great stop for trying new snacks with the kids, though it got quite crowded by afternoon and we had to keep tight hold of the little ones. Fushimi Inari more than made up for it, gates going on forever.
Fussy eater in our family finally found joy at the Nishiki Market food stalls.
Fushimi Inari's endless torii gates in the snow, unforgettable walk with the kids.
Gion at dusk in December felt like stepping into an old Japanese painting, lanterns glowing and hardly any tourists around. Golden Pavilion the next morning with a light dusting of snow was even better than the pictures.
Winter (December to February) for serene landscapes, fewer crowds, and a unique atmosphere.
