Every single day of this honeymoon had a moment worth remembering, from Fushimi Inari to the golden pavilion.
Shinkansen ride between the two cities was smoother than any flight we have taken.
Kinkaku-ji shimmering over its pond was quieter and more moving than either of us expected. Kyoto really is the calm after Tokyo's relentless energy. We sat by the pond for almost an hour, not saying much, just taking it in. Small moment but one of the most memorable of the whole honeymoon.
Rain followed us through most of our time in Kyoto and one temple visit turned into a rushed, soggy walk under shared umbrellas. Photos did not come out nearly as nice as we had hoped. Still enjoyed the trip overall, Japan handles rain better than most places, but timing was unlucky. Would check the forecast more carefully before locking dates next time.
Kyoto turned out to be the gentle exhale after Tokyo's relentless pace. We wandered Fushimi Inari's tunnels of vermillion gates early, before the crowds, then let the afternoon drift between temples. As a newly married couple we couldn't have asked for a more romantic contrast across five nights.
Tokyo and Kyoto both in just five nights meant rushing our last morning to catch the train. We ended up missing a temple we had specifically planned for, which stung a little. Everything before that was well paced though, Fushimi Inari, Shibuya, the bullet train ride itself. Would just build in one extra day if we did it again.
Late Spring (April-May) or Autumn (October-November) for milder weather, fewer crowds, and stunning natural beauty.
