Fushimi Inari's red gates at sunset, unforgettable for our whole family.
Honestly eight nights sounded long for a family trip but Japan justified every single day of it for us. Watching our kids bow respectfully at Senso-ji after learning the etiquette from our guide was a proud parent moment. Miyajima's torii gate rising from the water at high tide is something photos simply cannot capture properly. Osaka's food scene alone deserves its own separate trip someday. Kyoto's Fushimi Inari hike tired the kids out in the best possible way.
Travelling with two children under ten, we worried Japan might involve too much walking for them, but the itinerary paced things well. Senso-ji's calm mornings and Shibuya's evening energy gave a nice contrast each day so nobody got bored. Kyoto's temples were peaceful and our older one loved learning about samurai history from the guide. Only wish is a bit more downtime built into the busier Osaka leg.
Deer islands, neon streets, ancient shrines, Japan gave our kids memories for life.
Feeding deer on Miyajima made our son's entire year, honestly.
Feeding the deer on Miyajima made my son's whole year, no contest.
