Kenya Safari: Maasai Mara, Naivasha and Aberdare

After breakfast, check out and drive across the Great Rift Valley landscapes to Maasai Mara National Reserve. Check into your camp or lodge and settle in. Head out immediately for an afternoon game drive across the savannah. Your guide tracks wildlife using natural signs and radio reports, focusing on resident wildebeest, zebras, elephants, and lions in the late afternoon light. Return to your lodge for dinner and your overnight stay in the reserve.

Spend the entire day exploring the Maasai Mara savannah and acacia woodlands from an open-roof safari van. Carry a packed picnic lunch to spend the maximum possible time in the field. Your guide searches for the Big Five, cheetahs, and plains game, traversing the central plains and reaching areas along the Mara River known for crocodile sightings. Return to your accommodation in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Check out and visit a traditional Maasai Boma village. Experience the Adumu jumping dance, enter a Manyatta hut, and learn about local pastoral customs. Next, drive through the Rift Valley towards Lake Naivasha. Board a boat on the freshwater lake to observe hippo pods and African fish eagles. Land at the predator-free Crescent Island sanctuary for a guided walking safari amongst giraffes, zebras, and antelopes before heading to your hotel.

Drive to Hell's Gate National Park for a walking and cycling safari amidst extinct volcanoes and dramatic rock towers. Keep an eye out for gazelles, buffalos, and antelopes. Then, join a guided walk down into Ol Njorowa Gorge, a water-carved canyon featuring dramatic cliffs, rock formations, and geothermal steam vents with natural hot springs. The gorge requires some light scrambling over uneven ground. Return to your hotel in Naivasha for dinner.

Leave the lake region behind and drive up into the Aberdare highlands, an area filled with deep valleys, moorlands, and dense forest. Go on a game drive in search of forest wildlife such as the bongo, giant forest hog, and the Big Five. Stop by the grounds of the historic Tree Top Hotel to observe animals gathered at the waterhole, and take a short hike to scenic highland viewpoints. Enjoy lunch within the park or at a local lodge before retiring.

Have breakfast and take a scenic drive from Aberdare back to Nairobi, stopping at the Nairobi Hill View Point for panoramic vistas across the Great Rift Valley. Continue into Nairobi to explore the Nairobi National Museum complex, including its human evolution fossils and ornithology collections. Visit the adjacent Snake Park to see East African reptiles and amphibians. Finish with a city drive past Parliament Building and Nairobi Square (God's Corner) before checking into your hotel.
