Waitomo caves genuinely gave us goosebumps, thousands of glowworms glowing overhead in complete silence, unlike anything we have experienced before. We took the guided boat ride through the darkness holding hands, neither of us saying a word the entire time. It felt like a completely different world from the mountains and lakes of Queenstown just days earlier. Auckland after that felt like a nice cooldown before flying back, plenty of good coffee and a relaxed pace to close out the trip.
Auckland felt a bit rushed after the slower pace of Queenstown, we barely scratched the surface of the city before flying home. Still, the gondola and Milford Sound alone made the trip memorable.
Milford Sound at dawn was worth every bit of the early wake-up call, the fiords rising straight out of the water like something from a dream. Queenstown itself felt like a postcard, and driving ourselves around gave us the freedom to stop wherever we liked.
