Took my in-laws along for this one and even they, who complain about everything, could not stop raving about the hangi dinner at Te Puia. Watching the Pohutu Geyser erupt while the kids screamed in delight made the whole eleven nights worth it. Milford Sound the next week left us speechless, waterfalls just pouring off the cliffs.
Eleven nights sounds long on paper but this itinerary never dragged, every region felt genuinely different, from the geothermal steam rising around Rotorua to the ice fields at Franz Josef to the French charm of Akaroa where our daughter got to see dolphins from the boat. Worth every bit of the premium price tag for a family of five.
New Zealand exceeded every expectation, Queenstown to Christchurch stretch especially memorable for our whole family.
The morning we sailed Milford Sound it was socked in with grey mist and we barely saw the famous cliffs, which stung given the whole itinerary builds up to it. Rotorua and Waitomo lifted our spirits again, but that one big day fell flat for our lot.
