Watching those penguins at Boulders Beach was easily the best part of this trip for us. Cape of Good Hope viewpoint however was extremely crowded when we visited, hard to get a proper photo as a family or even enjoy the view without jostling for space.
This was our first trip to Africa as a family and Cape Town to Knysna turned out to be a wonderful introduction. The penguins waddling around at Boulders Beach had my kids in fits of laughter, genuinely one of the sweetest wildlife moments we have had on any holiday. Cape of Good Hope gave us that big dramatic ocean moment everyone talks about. Walking the suspension bridges at Tsitsikamma was a highlight for my husband especially, ancient forest all around and the sound of the river below. Knysna Waterfront in the evenings was calm and lovely, perfect way to end each day with the kids winding down.
Great family itinerary overall with a good mix of wildlife and outdoor activity. The drive between Cape Town and Knysna is long with young kids in the car, worth planning some snacks and games for that stretch.
The kids adored Boulders Beach, no complaints there. But the transfer to Knysna took much longer than we were told thanks to roadworks, and by the time we checked in everyone was fractious and hungry.
Penguins, ocean views and forest bridges, this trip had something for every member of the family.
The penguins and forest bridges were brilliant, though I wish we'd had one more free afternoon in Cape Town itself. We barely saw the city centre before we were back in the car heading to Knysna.
