This six-night itinerary gave us just enough time to cover both the historic peninsula and a proper day trip to Büyükada without feeling rushed. The Spice Market in the afternoon and the Bosphorus cruise in the evening on the same day worked out beautifully. Kids loved feeding the seagulls from the ferry deck. This is easily one of the best family trips we have done.
Blue Mosque was so packed with tour groups that we barely had five minutes inside before being herded along by the crowd. Everything outside the mosque was wonderful, this one stop just felt rushed.
Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque back to back in one morning was a lot for young kids but they held up fine with snack breaks. Our nine year old still talks about the carriage ride on the island.
Standing beneath Hagia Sophia's dome left all four of us silent for a good few minutes, even the kids stopped chattering. The Blue Mosque next door with its blue Iznik tiles was equally stunning and both are walkable from each other which made the day easy. Our Bosphorus cruise in the evening light showing Istanbul between two continents was postcard perfect. Büyükada's horse carriage ride was a nice slower paced day after all the walking in the old city.
The Spice Market was sensory overload in the very best way, the kids utterly fascinated by the mountains of Turkish delight and dried fruit. The calm of the sunset Bosphorus cruise that same evening was the perfect contrast after all the colour and noise.
