City coffee culture by day, coastal drives on the side, that is the five night rhythm this itinerary strikes for couples. Coach ride along the Great Ocean Road is long, budget the full day for it and do not plan anything else after.
Twelve Apostles viewpoint was so packed with tour buses when we arrived that getting a clean photo without strangers in frame took forever. Rest of the coastal drive was lovely and the city days were relaxed, just wish the main viewpoint had been managed better.
The Great Ocean Road day, with the Twelve Apostles saved as the last stop at fading light, genuinely left us speechless, worth every minute of the pre-dawn start. Back in the city the laneway coffee became a five-night habit neither of us wanted to break.
Discovering street art tucked into random laneways became our favourite unplanned activity in Melbourne, better than half the official sights honestly. Weather was properly cold in July though, pack accordingly.
Loch Ard Gorge is criminally underrated compared to the Twelve Apostles just down the road, fewer crowds and honestly just as dramatic.
Melbourne caught us off guard, we expected another big city and got somewhere intimate and personal, all laneway culture and small food places. The Twelve Apostles at the end of the Great Ocean Road day were the postcard moment, but honestly the city days were what made us want to return.
