Planned this as a birthday surprise for my partner and Dubrovnik delivered instantly with that first view through Pile Gate. Split felt more laid back in comparison, a nice contrast for the second half. Neither of us wanted to leave by the end of four nights.
Old Town Dubrovnik is stunning but our hotel room by the harbour was smaller and more tired looking than the photos suggested. Blue Lagoon excursion made up for a slightly disappointing stay. Split's palace area redeemed the trip for us in the end.

Spent our honeymoon on this Dubrovnik and Split route and it gave us the perfect balance of history and beach time. Swimming in the Elafiti Islands together was the most relaxed we have been in years. Diocletian's Palace in Split added just enough culture to round off the trip.
Chose this as our tenth anniversary trip and Croatia turned out to be an underrated gem for couples. Pile Gate and the old town walls of Dubrovnik gave us that fairytale medieval feeling from the very first afternoon. The boat trip out to the Elafiti Islands with just the two of us swimming in turquoise water was the kind of moment we will bring up for years. Split's Diocletian's Palace surprised us with how alive it still feels, shops and cafes tucked into ancient Roman walls. Four nights across two cities moved at exactly the right pace for a relaxed romantic escape.
The Blue Lagoon day, just the two of us swimming off the boat, was our favourite of the four.
