Well organised rail based itinerary, made travelling with young kids far less stressful than flights would have been. Berlin's history focused sights are a bit heavy for younger children so plan breaks accordingly.
Great mix of castles, cathedrals and chocolate, kids were entertained the entire thirteen nights.
Covering Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne by rail across thirteen nights is exactly the kind of trip we wanted, comfortable pace, no internal flights to stress about with kids. Neuschwanstein Castle was obviously the highlight for the children but the Romantic Road villages we passed through on the way were unexpectedly charming too, proper storybook Germany. Cologne Cathedral up close is genuinely overwhelming in scale, my son just stood there staring up for a good few minutes. The Chocolate Museum at the end of the trip was a fun, sweet way to close things out for the kids.
Brandenburg Gate to Cologne Cathedral, history lesson and family holiday combined perfectly.
Our five year old flatly refused to believe Neuschwanstein was a real building and not something out of a cartoon.
Berlin's Brandenburg Gate was our history starting point before the fairytale magic of Neuschwanstein a few days later. The Cologne Chocolate Museum at the very end was pure indulgence after all that grand architecture, and the kids were thrilled.
