Three cities packed into nine nights meant a few early mornings, but the kids adjusted quickly enough once the novelty of train travel kicked in. Neuschwanstein was worth every one of those early starts.
Romantic Road detour to one of the smaller medieval towns turned out to be an unexpected favourite for our family, much quieter than the bigger city stops on this route. Neuschwanstein a couple of days earlier had already set a fairytale tone for the whole trip. Cologne Cathedral at the very end left everyone in the car craning their necks upward. Nine nights across three cities gave the kids just enough variety without anyone getting worn out.
A well paced nine night German itinerary, the Bavarian culture stop with the traditional beer hall dinner was a genuine highlight for the whole family. Cologne at the end wrapped things up nicely too.
Neuschwanstein Castle appearing through the trees made our whole car go silent, kids included, straight out of a storybook. Munich's Marienplatz the day before had already put everyone in a good mood with the Glockenspiel show.
Old Town Cologne by the river in the evening was the most relaxed our family felt on the whole trip.
