St Mark's Basilica mosaics are even more stunning in person, we just stood there looking up for the longest time. Gondola ride afterward through the smaller canals away from the crowds was surprisingly peaceful.
Sistine Chapel and the wider Vatican complex were an absolute highlight of this trip, worth every bit of the early entry ticket. Venice side was lovely too though noticeably more expensive for food than we expected, a simple dinner near St Mark's Square cost far more than similar meals in Rome. Gondola ride is a bit of a tourist trap price wise but still worth doing once. Would recommend budgeting extra for Venice specifically.
Vatican museums and the Trevi Fountain area at night were everything we hoped Rome would be. Venice unfortunately hit a rainy patch during our two days there, our gondola ride got cancelled and rescheduled last minute which threw off the rest of our plans. St Mark's Square was also far more crowded than we expected, hard to enjoy the basilica properly with that many tour groups pushing through.
St Mark's Basilica had us craning our necks at those gold mosaics for a solid twenty minutes.
