Sistine Chapel queue was brutally crowded and our younger child was overtired and cranky by the time we finally got inside, hard to enjoy it properly with all the pushing. Florence half of the trip was much calmer and more enjoyable for everyone honestly.
In-laws joined us for this one and even they admitted Florence exceeded expectations compared to what they remembered from decades ago. Duomo's scale genuinely surprised the whole group.
Kids were glued to every gladiator story our guide told inside the Colosseum, worth every bit of the entry queue. Florence felt like a nice change of pace after the intensity of Rome, gentler and more walkable for the little ones.
Rome with kids can be chaotic but this itinerary kept things manageable and interesting throughout.
Colosseum and Florence Duomo both delivered on the history our kids had only read about in school.
Colosseum morning slot worked well for us since it beat the worst of the heat with two kids in tow. Sistine Chapel ceiling left even our teenager quiet for once, that says something. Florence Duomo climb was too much for our younger one so we split into two groups, which the itinerary flexibility allowed. Gelato stops every evening became the kids' favourite tradition of the whole trip.
