Gondola ride down the Grand Canal was every bit as magical as the brochures promise, kids included, who were delighted just watching the gondolier navigate the narrow turns. Rome had given us ancient ruins, Florence gave us Renaissance art, and Venice closed things out with something entirely different again. Three completely different cities in one trip could have felt disjointed but the pacing kept it coherent. Our kids still talk about which city was their favourite and cannot agree.
Sistine Chapel ceiling left even our restless ten year old completely silent for a full five minutes. That alone tells you something about the place.
Every single city on this itinerary earned its place, Florence especially surprised us.
Vatican queue took over two hours in the heat with two tired, cranky kids in tow. A vendor stationed right by the entrance kept pushing overpriced souvenirs on us the entire wait, which got old fast. The museum itself once inside is obviously extraordinary, so the wait is not entirely wasted. Just go in prepared for the line and maybe book an earlier slot if the package allows it.
Rome to Venice by train was smoother than we'd feared, and honestly the kids enjoyed the countryside sliding past the window more than a couple of the museums. The St Mark's mosaics up close were the grown-ups' favourite.
Three cities in six nights meant early starts daily, exhausting but manageable with older kids.
