Loved almost every bit of this trip, the mix of Hakone's quiet mountains and Tokyo's madness at Shibuya was well balanced. Only thing is the train transfers between three cities got a little tiring with luggage in tow. Still a wonderful romantic escape overall.
Zero regrets after three cities in six nights, each one delivering something different for us as a couple.
We went for our first anniversary and Japan did not disappoint one bit. Hakone's misty mornings looking out at the hills set such a peaceful tone before the Tokyo whirlwind began. Shibuya crossing genuinely feels like being in a movie, thousands of people and somehow no one bumps into you. Kyoto's temples slowed things back down again which we appreciated after the city noise. My only complaint is that some evenings the schedule felt a touch packed for a couple who just wanted to linger.
As newlyweds we wanted something that felt both adventurous and romantic and this delivered on both fronts. Watching the sunset colours change over Lake Ashi while Fuji sat quietly in the background is something photos genuinely cannot capture. Shibuya gave us that big city thrill for one evening before we moved to the calmer rhythm of Kyoto. Walking through Fushimi Inari hand in hand at our own pace, no guide rushing us, made it feel personal rather than touristy.
Kinkaku-ji reflecting in that pond left both of us speechless, easily the trip's highlight.
Kyoto was lovely, but the three-city train shuffle with heavy bags wore us both out by the end.
