Arashiyama Bamboo Grove at dawn was worth every early alarm we set.
My husband and I chose winter deliberately to avoid the cherry blossom crowds and it paid off completely. Standing before the Golden Pavilion with barely another soul around felt like a private moment. Walking hand in hand through the Fushimi Inari gates as the light faded was surreal. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove's stillness stayed with me long after we left. Kiyomizu-dera's stage view over a slightly snow dusted Kyoto was the visual highlight of the whole trip. Gion in the evening, quietly hoping for a geisha sighting, was a lovely way to end our days.
Second trip to Japan for us, but first time choosing winter and first time as a couple without extended family along. Kyoto felt entirely different in the cold, quieter and somehow more intimate. The Golden Pavilion's reflection was sharper without summer haze. Arashiyama's bamboo stalks creaking in the wind was oddly calming. Only downside was a couple of restaurants near Gion being surprisingly expensive for fairly ordinary food, worth researching options beforehand.
Fushimi Inari is beautiful but even in supposedly quiet winter months the lower gates were packed with tour groups, we had to walk quite far up before getting a clear photo. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in the early morning was much more peaceful and honestly the better experience of the two.
Magical in the cold, though a couple of Gion restaurants charged a lot for fairly ordinary food.
This was our first Japan trip as a couple without the extended family along, and Kyoto in the cold felt entirely different, quieter and more intimate. Walking side by side through the fading light at Fushimi Inari was surreal.
Winter (December to February) for serene landscapes, fewer crowds, and a truly authentic experience.
