Queenstown Luge was hands down the kids' favourite activity of the whole road trip, we did about six runs before anyone was ready to move on.
Our Queenstown to Franz Josef transfer day was brutally long with barely any proper stops for the kids to stretch, close to six hours of driving that tested everyone's patience by the end. Franz Josef itself was worth it once we arrived though.
Winter timing meant snow capped mountains everywhere and noticeably thinner crowds at every stop, which as parents travelling with young kids we appreciated more than we expected to.
Milford Sound cruise is worth building an entire itinerary around, waterfalls pouring straight into the fiord while our kids pointed at every seal they spotted.
Franz Josef weather did not cooperate on our one full day there, low cloud cover meant we could not see much beyond the glacier base which was disappointing after building it up to the kids all trip.
