Long but rewarding describes this trip well, fourteen nights with young kids needs proper pacing and this route delivered it, city then lake then mountain. Would have liked one built-in rest day around the midpoint though.
Montreux was gorgeous and the lakeside promenade at sunset is exactly as advertised, but the transfer from Interlaken ran nearly three hours longer than planned because of a diversion, and with two tired kids in the back that stretch tested everyone's patience.
Our son is obsessed with trains so the Switzerland leg was basically him in heaven, especially the ride up to Pilatus. Chillon Castle surprised all of us too, we expected the kids to be bored within ten minutes and instead they wanted to explore every corridor.
Kids still talk nonstop about the glaciers at Jungfraujoch, best souvenir of the whole trip.
Grandparents managed the pace better than we expected, the mix of train rides and gentle walks meant nobody was ever too exhausted. Chillon Castle followed by chocolate tasting kept two kids under ten fully entertained.
