Zermatt: A Week of Alpine Family Wonders

Mountain scenery cannot be faulted but our standard room felt cramped for a family of four across seven nights. Restaurants near the main square are quite overpriced for what you get, we ended up cooking simple meals ourselves a few nights. Kids still had a wonderful time at the glacier palace though.

Zermatt is postcard perfect and this itinerary gave our family a relaxed pace across the full week. Wolli Park became a daily stop since the kids never got tired of it despite visiting the bigger attractions too. Five Lakes Trail picnic was gorgeous though a bit more walking than we expected with young children in tow. Overall a memorable trip, just pace the hiking days realistically if travelling with little ones.

Great family destination overall, kids especially loved the glacier palace and the playground at Sunnegga.

This was our first family trip to Switzerland and Zermatt turned out to be the perfect introduction. Museum on the first ascent of the Matterhorn sparked so many questions from our ten year old, we were answering mountaineering trivia for days after. Five Lakes Trail picnic remains everyone's favourite memory from the whole week.

Car free town made it so much easier keeping track of the kids compared to other European cities we have visited. Matterhorn views from Gornergrat are honestly better than any photo can capture. Standard tier accommodation was simple but comfortable enough for our needs.

Zermatt as a single base worked wonderfully for us with two young kids, no shuffling hotels every two days. Five Lakes picnic was our favourite afternoon, the water was so still you could see the Matterhorn reflected perfectly while the children paddled at the edges. Zermatt Museum gave our older one a real appreciation for the mountaineering history behind the peak we had been staring at all week. Wolli Park rounded things off nicely, a proper playground with that view in the background.
