Building your Theni Highland Circuit itinerary…

A family road loop out of Theni through Kurangani, Munnar tea country, the Vagamon meadows and Periyar, returning down the Cumbummettu ghat
Leave Theni by seven and be at Kumbakkarai before the Kodaikanal day crowd. The Forest Department runs a short battery-cart from the car park, and the bathing pool is stepped and railed, which is why this particular waterfall works with small children when most Ghats falls do not. Dry off and run west through Bodinayakanur to Kurangani, a cardamom and coffee village at the foot of the hills on a single-track estate road. This is the trailhead for Kolukkumalai and Top Station, so the real walking here is a full day and not a family outing; keep to the lower stream, the tea slopes and the view back over the Theni plain. In the afternoon climb the Bodimettu ghat into Kerala and drop into Munnar past Devikulam.
Give the morning to one high point, not two. Eravikulam at Rajamalai is the better choice with children: you park at the base, take the park shuttle up and then walk a tarred path where the Nilgiri tahr come close, and entry is by timed ticket from the morning until early afternoon. It is closed for the whole of February and March for the tahr calving season, so check before you build the day around it. If it is shut, Top Station is the substitute, a viewpoint on the border looking straight back down over Theni district. Then take the high-range road south through Poopara, Nedumkandam, Kattappana and Elappara to Vagamon. Arrive in time for the pine plantation and the Kurisumala road before the light goes.
Vagamon's meadows, Mottakunnu, are bare grass hills you can walk over freely, with a small ticket and a separate charge for photography. Go early, before the wind picks up and before the paragliding and buggy operators fill the slope. Marmala waterfall is the day's decision point: it is around 5 km of rough estate track from Teekoy followed by a walk and a scramble to a 60-metre fall with a deep pool, no lifeguards and no railings. It is not a stop for young children or anyone unsure on wet rock, and the honest advice is to skip it and take the Kolahalamedu adventure park and glass bridge instead. Then cross to Thekkady in the early afternoon for a Periyar lake cruise.
Leave Kumily early, because Ramakkalmedu is best before the cloud sits on it. The ridge carries the Kuravan and Kurathi statues and looks straight out over Bodinayakanur, Cumbum and the Theni plain you drove out of on day one, which is a satisfying way to end the loop. It is one of the windiest points in the ranges, so hold on to hats and small children near the edge. From there the direct descent is the Cumbummettu ghat, steep and narrow but used by service buses. Down in the valley, Cumbum is the Muscat Hamburg country, panneer thratchai, which carries a GI tag and crops through the year rather than in one season. Then it is a flat 40 minutes back to Theni.
