Building your Theni Meghamalai Thekkady itinerary…

A short road trip from Theni into the Highwavys tea country, down to Suruli Falls, and across to Periyar before returning over Ramakkalmedu
Leave Theni at first light. The run to Chinnamanur is easy plains driving, roughly 25 km, and it is your last reliable stop for fuel, cash and breakfast. A few kilometres beyond Chinnamanur the Meghamalai forest checkpost opens at 06:00. You sign in and show ID and vehicle papers, and from there the road climbs through eighteen hairpins into the Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve. The surface is narrow, patched and broken in places, so budget close to three hours from Theni rather than the two the 54 km suggests. Highwavys sits at about 1,500 m in Woodbriar tea. Spend the afternoon on the estate roads and the evening watching cloud roll over the ridge. There is no market, no nightlife and patchy mobile signal, which is rather the point.
Start the descent early. The same eighteen hairpins take about two hours down to Chinnamanur, and you want to be off the hill with the morning to spare. From Chinnamanur run south through Uthamapalayam to Cumbum, then out to Suruli Falls, which is roughly 10 km from Cumbum and about 56 km from Theni. It opens at 08:00 and closes at 16:00, and the last stretch is a short walk from the car park. The Suruli river rises in the Meghamalai hills you slept on, which makes the sequence rather satisfying. After lunch take NH183 through Kambam and up the Kumily ghat into Kerala. The afternoon in Thekkady is either the Periyar lake boat or a spice garden walk, and the evening is a stage performance in Kumily.
Go early to Ramakkalmedu, about 40 km from Kumily via Nedumkandam on the Munnar road, and reckon an hour and a quarter each way. At roughly 980 m the hill is not high, but it is one of the windiest places in the state and it looks straight out over Cumbum, Theni and the plains you are about to drive back across. The Kuravan and Kurathi twin statue, put up in 2005, stands on the summit beside the wind farm. Mornings are clearest before haze builds. Then retrace to Kumily, drop down the ghat and take NH183 through Kambam, Cumbum and Uthamapalayam to Theni. It is close to five hours of driving in total, so leave Kumily by 07:30 and do not plan anything for the evening.
Reserve with a mountain, forests and lakes making a habitat for protected tigers and elephants.
