The Colosseum was incredible but so packed the day we went that our guide had to shout to be heard, and the whole walkthrough felt rushed. Venice and Modena were far calmer, but that opening Rome morning was more chaotic than we'd bargained for.
Seven nights across Rome, Venice and Modena gave us the perfect mix of history, romance and food for our anniversary. Rome hit us with scale and ancient history in a way photos never quite capture. Venice slowed everything down to a gondola's pace, which we badly needed after the Rome crowds. Modena at the end, with the balsamic tasting and the Ferrari Museum, was a genuinely fun surprise closer.
Balsamic vinegar tasting at the acetaia in Modena was an unexpected highlight of the whole trip. The aged varieties tasted nothing like what we get back home.
