Neither of us had been to Japan before and Fukuoka felt like a gentler, less overwhelming introduction than Tokyo would have been. Renting a little rowboat at Ohori Park turned into an unexpectedly funny afternoon since neither of us could steer properly. The yatai stalls at night more than made up for it though, some of the best ramen either of us has ever had.
The Nakasu river lit up with food stalls at night is something our photos completely failed to capture.
A couple of the more popular yatai stalls had queues out into the street some nights, so we ended up trying different ones than planned, which turned out fine since Fukuoka's food scene is strong everywhere.
Rain on two of our six evenings meant a couple of yatai stalls simply did not open, which was disappointing since that was the experience we had been most looking forward to. The market and the tower visit were unaffected and still lovely.
Good food, calm parks and easy walking summed up our six nights perfectly, exactly the low key couple's trip we wanted. The Nakasu river at night lit up with the food stalls is something photos just cannot capture properly.
Fukuoka was not even on our radar until a friend recommended it and now we cannot stop talking about it. The yatai food stalls along the Nakasu river at night were the highlight of the whole trip, cheap, delicious and such a lively atmosphere to share with my husband. Ohori Park's lake in the late afternoon was calm and pretty, a nice contrast to the energy of the yatai scene. Fukuoka Tower at sunset with the whole coastline visible was a lovely quiet moment together.
