Bringing the whole family, including my in-laws, to Fukuoka worked out beautifully with the pace suiting everyone from the grandparents down to our youngest. Kushida Shrine in the morning, a relaxed lunch, and Canal City in the evening became our rhythm for most of the trip. Marine World needs a full day though, we underestimated how much there was to see there and felt a little rushed toward closing.
Canal City Hakata's fountain show at night had our kids mesmerised, we watched it twice. Kushida Shrine earlier that same day gave a nice sense of contrast between old and new Fukuoka.
Early rainy season lived up to its name and two of our six days had steady rain that pushed our outdoor plans around Ohori Park indoors instead. Marine World being mostly indoor saved the trip from feeling like a washout.
Landed in Fukuoka expecting a quiet stopover and got a wonderfully manageable first trip to Japan for our family of four instead. Kushida Shrine gave us a real sense of the city's history without overwhelming the kids with too much walking. Marine World Uminonakamichi was, without question, the biggest hit of the whole trip, our children have not stopped talking about the dolphin show since we got home. Canal City Hakata in the evening with its fountain shows and food options rounded off most of our days perfectly.
We brought my in-laws along and worried the pace might not suit everyone, but Kushida Shrine in the morning and Canal City by evening became a rhythm that kept grandparents and grandkids equally happy.
The kids loved Canal City and the dolphins, no arguments there. But one rainy afternoon left us with nothing to do but wander a shopping mall, which is not quite the Japan memory we had hoped to make.
June (early rainy season, but still enjoyable)
