Kyoto alone for six nights gave us a depth of experience we would never have gotten hopping between cities. Walking the entire length of Fushimi Inari's torii tunnel took hours but felt meditative rather than tiring. Nishiki Market became our go to spot for trying odd little snacks neither of us could identify. Evenings on the Philosopher's Path were quiet and unhurried, exactly the pace we wanted for this trip.
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is beautiful in photos but in person it was so packed with tour groups that we could barely get a quiet moment, quite different from the serene vibe we expected. Fushimi Inari redeemed things somewhat since we went early and had the gates mostly to ourselves. Nishiki Market was fine but overpriced for what you actually get in the small portions.
Nishiki Market became our little evening ritual, poking around the pickle stalls and trying whatever skewer looked strangest. My wife got hooked on the soy-milk doughnuts. Only snag was how packed the covered arcade gets, we kept losing each other in the crush.
Golden Pavilion at first light, just us and the still water, unforgettable.
Focusing the whole trip on one city instead of hopping around Japan was a great decision for us as a couple. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove gets crowded fast though, so go as early as possible if you want those peaceful photos everyone posts.
The bamboo grove at Arashiyama was dreamy at sunrise, well worth dragging ourselves out of bed for.
