Oktoberfest Munich 2025 – The Ultimate Beer Festival

Theresienwiese, Munich, Germany

Raise a stein at the world's largest Volksfest. Experience 16 days of Bavarian tradition, massive beer tents, folk music, and carnival rides.

About the Festival

Oktoberfest is not just a beer festival; it is a legendary celebration of Bavarian culture that attracts over 6 million visitors annually. For two weeks, the "Wiesn" (Theresienwiese fairgrounds) becomes the center of the world for beer lovers.

It began in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese, and the party hasn't stopped since. The festival features 14 massive beer tents (seating up to 10,000 people each), traditional Oompah bands, and a giant funfair outside.

It plays host to millions of liters of "Oktoberfestbier," brewed specifically for the event by Munich's six major breweries. But it's also family-friendly with rides, games, and incredible food.

Festival Highlights

The Beer Tents

From the traditional Schottenhamel to the party-centric Hofbräu-Festzelt, each of the 14 big tents has a unique vibe.

👗

Traditional Dress

Almost everyone wears Tracht (traditional clothing). Lederhosen for men and Dirndls for women are essential.

🍺

Masskrug

Drinking from the iconic 1-liter glass mug (Mass). Warning: The beer is stronger than average (around 6% ABV).

🥨

Bavarian Food

Feast on Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), giant pretzels (Brezn), and Obatzda cheese spread.

🐎

Opening Parade

The 'Einzug der Wiesnwirte' features breweries on flower-decorated horse carriages marching through Munich.

🎺

Oompah Bands

Dance on the benches (but not the tables!) as brass bands play festive classics like 'Ein Prosit'.

Essential Festival Tips

1

Table Reservations

Evening tables are booked almost a year in advance. Without a reservation, arrive by 10 AM (weekdays) or 8 AM (weekends).

2

Bring Cash

While some places take cards, cash is king in the tents. You'll need it for tipping servers (crucial for fast service).

3

No Large Bags

Backpacks and large bags are strictly prohibited for security. Bring only what fits in your pockets or a small purse.

4

Go on 'Oide Wiesn'

Visit the 'Old Oktoberfest' section for vintage rides, traditional music, and a more relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere.
