La Tomatina 2025 – The World's Biggest Food Fight

Buñol (Valencia), Spain

Join 20,000 people in the small town of Buñol for the craziest hour of your life, throwing over 100 metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes in the streets.

About the Festival

La Tomatina is arguably the world's messiest and most fun festival. Held annually on the last Wednesday of August in the tiny town of Buñol (near Valencia), it transforms the streets into a river of red tomato pulp.

The festival started by accident in 1945 during a parade brawl and has since grown into an internationally famous event. Trucks haul in over 100 tons of low-quality, over-ripe tomatoes strictly for throwing.

The actual "fight" only lasts for exactly one hour (11:00 AM to 12:00 PM), but the party starts much earlier with the "Palo Jabón" (soap pole) challenge and continues long after with food, music, and washing off in the local river.

Festival Highlights

🍅

The Tomato Fight

One hour of pure chaos. Everyone is a target. Remember to squash the tomatoes before throwing them to avoid injury.

🍖

Palo Jabón

The 'Ham on a Pole' challenge. The festival only starts once someone climbs a greased pole to retrieve a ham from the top.

🎉

The After-Party

After the fight, fire trucks hose down the streets (and people), and the town parties with paella and sangria.

🥘

Valencia City

Most visitors stay in nearby Valencia, a beautiful coastal city famous for its City of Arts and Sciences and Paella.

🚿

Water Cannons

Locals from balconies dump buckets of water on the crowd to help clean them off and cool them down.

🌍

International Crowd

Meet travelers from Australia, Japan, the UK, and everywhere else united by the desire to handle tomatoes.

Essential Festival Tips

1

Buy Tickets Early

Entry is limited to 20,000 people and tickets sell out months in advance. Official tickets are required to enter the town center.

2

Wear Goggles

Tomato juice is acidic and stings your eyes. Wearing tight-fitting swimming goggles is the #1 pro tip.

3

Wear Closed Shoes

Do not wear flip-flops; you will lose them in the tomato sludge. Wear old sneakers you don't mind throwing away.

4

Waterproof Camera

Do not bring a DSLR or expensive phone without a heavy-duty waterproof case. The juice gets inside everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt to get hit?

It shouldn't. The rules state you must squash the tomato in your hand before throwing it to soften the impact. However, in the chaos, accidents happen.

Where should I stay?

Stay in Valencia (38km away). There are plenty of hotels and hostels, and trains/buses run constantly to Buñol on festival morning.

What happens to the waste?

The tomatoes used are low-quality and grown specifically for the festival (not fit for sale). The acidity of the tomatoes actually cleans the streets!
