Capture the soul of Mumbai through these five immersive days.
Arrive at 8 AM for the best light and least crowds. Cross the street to see the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. The architecture is a stunning blend of Moorish, Oriental and Florentine styles. Do not take photos of people without asking—it's a sensitive high-security area.
Walk from Colaba Causeway to CST Station. You'll pass high court, university and the Flora Fountain. It's the best way to see the 'Victorian Gothic' architecture of Mumbai. Stop for a picture at Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) at night—it's lit up beautifully.
Leopold Cafe & Bar (Legendary 1871 institution) or The Table in Colaba for world-class fusion cuisine.
Take the ferry from Gateway of India (9 AM is first boat). The caves date back to the 5th century and feature magnificent rock-cut temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Beware of monkeys—they are professional bag-snatchers!
The absolute soul of Mumbai. Walk the promenade at sunset. As the streetlights come on, the curve of the bay looks like a necklace of pearls. It's safe, vibrant and free.
Bachelorr's, Marine Drive (Famous fruit creams) or Pizza by the Bay for a great view of the ocean.
The world's largest open-air laundry. Best viewed from the flyover near Mahalaxmi station. It's a chaotic, fascinating system that has worked for centuries.
Try it during non-peak hours (11 AM - 4 PM). Travel from Mahalaxmi to Bandra. It's the lifeline of the city. Stand near the door (hold on tight!) to feel the Mumbai wind.
Kyani & Co. Bakery (Authentic Irani cafe) or Girgaon Chowpatty for Pav Bhaji and Bhel Puri.
Book an organized tour of Film City in Goregaon. You might see a live TV set or even a movie being filmed. It's a peek behind the curtain of the world's most prolific film industry.
Walk along Juhu Beach and catch a glimpse of 'Jalsa' (Amitabh Bachchan's house) nearby. The beach is a carnival of food stalls, horse rides and families.
Mahesh Lunch Home, Juhu (Authentic Mangalorean seafood—Butter Pepper Garlic Crab is legendary).
Shop at the street stalls of Linking Road for trendy clothes and shoes (bargain hard!). Then head to Bandra Fort (Castella de Aguada) for a stunning view of the Sea Link bridge.
Olive Bar and Kitchen, Bandra (Chic Mediterranean) or Jai Hind for incredible local seafood.
The essential guide for the maximum city.
