Gruyères and Lake Geneva together make a wonderful short getaway, scenery genuinely rivals anywhere in Europe. Our one gripe is that trains between the two towns needed tighter connections than the itinerary allowed, we ended up sprinting through a station once. Chocolate factory tour is a bit touristy but still fun for an hour. Would happily do this route again with a slightly slower pace built in.
Chillon Castle sitting right on the water was more beautiful in person than any photo we had seen. Gruyères old town is tiny but so charming, we just wandered without any real plan.
Pricey in places, but romantic and photogenic throughout our four days together.
The chocolate factory tour was fun for an hour but a touch touristy for our taste, herded along in big groups past the machines. Still, the tasting at the end more than made up for the conveyor-belt feel of the walk-through.
The views throughout were gorgeous, but our hotel near the castle was surprisingly basic for the price, thin walls and a tired bathroom that felt at odds with Switzerland's reputation. Location was perfect, the room just wasn't.
Spa evening at Domaine de Divonne after two days of castle hopping was exactly the reset we needed. Everything about this leg of Europe felt calm and unhurried, ideal for a couple wanting quality time over checklist tourism.
